Sidste Heat: Born on the speedway tracks

Sidste Heat is a Danish feature film in development at Rebel Pictures. It takes place in a provincial speedway community under pressure, where the atmosphere has grown heavy and both the audience and the next generation of riders are slowly disappearing.

At the centre is Chris, played by Morten Agerholm, a former speedway star forced back onto the bike after a devastating crash ended his career. What begins as a comeback story becomes a film about guilt, masculinity, belonging and the difficult road home.

The story grows from director Jesper Tønnes’ childhood in Føvling and his own relationship with rural Denmark. The film looks at the social dynamics that can make these communities strong, loyal and deeply meaningful, but also difficult to fit into.

Speedway is more than a backdrop. Four motorcycles, four laps and no brakes create a world where every decision has an immediate consequence. In Sidste Heat, the speed, noise, dust and long silences between races become part of the emotional story.

Together with a dedicated film crew, professional speedway riders and volunteers, Rebel Pictures filmed a series of tests at Moldow Speedway Arena and Fjelsted Speedway Club. The material combines analog 16mm film, digital cinema cameras and action cameras in search of a visual language where speed, intimacy and vulnerability can exist side by side.

The project is being developed by Mads Erichsen, Kristoffer Engholm Aabo, Jan Warborg Hansen and Jesper Tønnes. The test material was made possible by professional riders, an engaged film crew, Morten Agerholm and Mira Obling as Chris and Sofie, and everyone who opened the doors and allowed us to get close.
